Graphic Design Competition

Objective: Develop and design an 11×17” concert poster.

Assignment: Using preferred available computer software, participants will design an 11×17” concert poster geared toward the promotion of a concert event. 

Provided Materials: Access to computer lab, Graphic Design software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or Canva), Assets for the design (photographs and logo), UWA faculty and student guides

Judging Criteria: Designs will be judged on creativity, contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

 

Sales Pitch Competition

Objective: Write and verbally present a sales pitch for a product to a panel of judges.

Assignment: Participants will be provided with a product during conference check-in paired with available research about the impact/use of the product. Participants will write/develop a sales pitch presentation that will last no more than two (2) minutes. Participants will present the sales pitch to a live panel of judges. The provided product may be used as a visual aid for the presentation. 

Provided Materials: A sample product and research about the use/impact of that product

Judging Criteria: Sales presentations will be judged on persuasion, creativity, and presentation skills.

Commercial Photography Competition

Objective: Develop and submit two (2) commercial-quality photographs to help promote or sell a real world product or brand. 

Assignment: Participants will photograph a branded product and submit two (2) edited photos of that product geared toward helping sell it to potential customers. The product will be provided for participants competing in-person. Examples of brands used in the past: Lay’s potato chips, Coca-Cola. 

Provided Materials: Participants competing in-person will be provided with access to a computer lab, a digital camera, editing software (iPhoto, Lightroom, or Photoshop), and a UWA student guide.

Judging Criteria: Submitted photos will be judged on their creativity, commercial quality, and overall representation of the brand.

TV Anchoring Competition

Objective: Present a 2-3 minute TV anchoring script on-camera using a teleprompter. Students participating in TV anchoring should dress in professional attire. 

Assignment: Participants will be provided with a 2-3 minute news script during conference check-in. Each student will have two takes to read through the entire script on-camera, using a teleprompter. Participants should conclude the reading with “This is YOUR NAME, IMC3”. 

Provided Materials: Students will be provided with a 2-3 minute news anchoring script at check-in. The same script will be pre-loaded on the studio teleprompter. Recording will take place in the UWA TV Studio with a student and faculty guide.

Judging Criteria: Anchors will be judged on professional appearance, speed/pacing, inflection, enunciation, posture, tone of voice, facial gestures, and on-camera presence.

Social Media Competition

Objective: Utilize social media skills, creativity, and marketing principles to generate a social media post for a provided assignment.

Assignment: Participants will be assigned a task, target audience, and theme during a brief informative session at the start of the competition. Participants must demonstrate buzz, creativity, and knowledge of social media marketing principles in the creation of a TikTok post that fits the assignment.

Provided Materials: A brief overview of the assignment, a faculty guide, a classroom, Wi-Fi. Participants will need a personal phone or tablet with access to TikTok to complete the assignment. 

Judging Criteria: Posts will be judged on creativity, social media marketing principles, adherence to assignment guidelines, accuracy, buzz-worthy content, and overall fit for the assigned target audience.

Sports Reporting Competition

Objective: Utilize statistics and background information of an active student-athlete in order to conduct a meaningful on-camera interview with the athlete. 

Assignment: Participants will be provided with statistics and background for a UWA student-athlete during registration check-in. Participants should study the information to develop a list of meaningful and related questions to ask the student-athlete on-camera. Participants will be given 2-3 minutes to interview the student-athlete. The interview will follow the format for a sideline reporter. 

Provided Materials: Student-athlete statistics and background information, videographer and video camera equipment with microphone, student-athlete subject, UWA student guide

Judging Criteria: Reporters will be judged on quality of questions, flexibility, flow/steer of conversation, on-camera presence, interview relevance, and conversational quality.
